LA MOTOR SHOW: Mercedes-Maybach S 650 Cabriolet teased

Benz looks to take on Bentley, Rolls-Royce with first-ever Maybach convertible

Convertible cars often turn heads, but if you really want to attract attention the latest stunner from Stuttgart should suffice - an ultra-exclusive V12-powered machine with a hand-crafted interior.

Set to make its debut at the Los Angeles motor show in a couple of days, the Mercedes-Maybach S 650 Cabriolet will likely sit above the wild AMG version of the S-Class drop top as the brand's flagship (and most expensive) convertible.

Although few details have been revealed at this stage, a small plaque glimpsed in one of the social media preview images shows "1 of 300" meaning the Maybach brand will build only a small run of vehicles, ensuring exclusivity.

It's unlikely the exterior will be wildly different to regular S-Class convertibles, save for a few extra lashings of chrome and Maybach badges, but it's the interior appointments that will make this vehicle a true rival to vehicles from Rolls-Royce and Bentley, supported by parent companies BMW and Audi respectively.

Diamond-quilted leather upholstery is in evidence, as is a high-end Burmester stereo, and potential buyers can expect more automated convenience functions than the annual robotics convention in downtown Tokyo.

Based on the naming convention, the Maybach S 650 Cabriolet is expected to feature the same twin-turbo V12 powerplant as the Mercedes-AMG S 65 Cabriolet, which generates 463kW and 1000Nm.

It has a top speed of 300km/h and accelerates 0-100km/h in 4.1 seconds and comes with a seven-speed automatic transmission. Put simply, it's devastatingly fast.

The only official information revealed as part of the 22 second teaser video was that fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are claimed at 12L/100 km and 272g/km respectively.

The Maybach can be expected to have a much softer suspension setup than the AMG and could employ a fancy-pants version of the Mercedes air suspension to ensure occupants float along in the lap of luxury.

The lavish Maybach convertible will be revealed on November 16 Los Angeles time and we'll have all the details then.
