Mercedes-Maybach shows off bomb-proof S600

Prestige brand reveals armoured S600 Pullman Guard that's perfect for unpopular dictators

Mercedes-Maybach has unveiled a new bullet- and blast-proof version of its S600 Pullman that's claimed to have been created for heads of state and "individuals at particular risk".

Based on the current 6.5-metre long version of the extra-long limo, the new vehicle, called the S600 Pullman Guard, is said to be barely discernible from the regular S-Class behemoth.

In reality, the changes over the normal Pullman have been extensive, with not just armoured panels added, but huge changes made to the regular S600 Mercedes-Maybach.

The biggest difference is the inclusion of a new reinforced steel bulkhead passenger cell that protects occupants from bullets and bombs.

With an incredible kerb weight of 5100kg, the armoured S600's doors are now said to be so heavy that the manufacturer had to add power assistance. The windows, meanwhile, are now hydraulically operated - harping back to the original Mercedes-Benz 600 sedan made during the mid-sixties.

Those extra-thick blast-proof windows are actually made of multiple laminate glazing that is then coated with polycarbonate for added splinter protection on impact.

Inside, wealthy dignitaries or heads of state are treated to what Mercedes-Maybach claims is the largest legroom in the segment, with generous room for four passengers.

Under the bonnet the armoured S600 comes equipped with a 390kW/830Nm 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12. Benz hasn't released how quick (or slow) its heavy limo is to 100km/h but has admitted its five-tonne-plus kerb weight has forced it to limit the Pullman Guard's top speed to just 160km/h.

Optional extras for the Pullman Guard include sirens, flashing lamps, two-way radios, an emergency starter battery and an external loudspeaker PA system.

In Europe the S600 Pullman Guard is available to order now with deliveries beginning in the second half of 2017. Pricing begins at $2 million before options - almost three times the cost of the non-armoured, regular S600 Pullman.
