MG Cyberster sports car a step closer to Oz

Local case builds for all-new electric MG roadster as right-hand drive production confirmed

The stunning MG Cyberster has been confirmed for right-hand drive production, prompting MG Motor Australia to declare the case is now being built for the high-performance sports car to be sold Down Under.

Every bit as futuristic as its name suggests, the fully-electric two-door sports car emerged at the Shanghai motor show last month – complete with the “world’s first purely electric e-sports cockpit”, according to MG – and was clearly no mere one-trick show pony.

A spokesperson for MG Motor Australia said the company was “excited to confirm that the Cyberster electric sportster will be offered in both left- and right-hand drive configuration”.

“As part of our ‘Electric For Everyone’ strategy, MG Australia will now examine the Cyberster’s potential for the Australian and New Zealand markets,” he added.

Official details are still to be confirmed, however the 2022 MG Cyberster is said to have been built on a new EV architecture that enables a driving range of up to 800km and carries a powertrain that offers supercar-rivalling pace, with 0-100km/h devoured in less than 3.0 seconds.

Now we wait to see how much of the two-seater concept car is carried over into production, not just in terms of its powertrain but also its stunning exterior design and futuristic cabin.

The front-end of the reborn MGB is dominated by a super-wide recessed mouth-like grille and oval headlights. Its low-slung silhouette is complemented by a so-called “laser belt” LED light and huge wheels, while the rear-end is optimised for high-level aerodynamics.

Marketed towards Gen Z gamers who want to “blend real and virtual worlds’, the driver-focused cockpit sees the two passengers separated, with a large LED instrument cluster behind the gamer-style steering wheel along with a second central screen.

The Chinese car-maker says it partnered with gaming company Bilibili E-Sports to design the first “supercar gaming cockpit” with e-sports themed sound and lighting to create “an in-car gaming experience”.

Zero-gravity seats appear to float, while a red and white theme is carried throughout the cabin, with sharp lines and “parameterized texture”.

The 2022 MG Cyberster will also feature “advanced smart technology” including 5G interconnection capabilities, “active upgrading technology” and Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities.
