MG4 EV Urban Essence 54 2026 Review

There’s only one fully kitted-out Essence variant, but there are two battery sizes to choose from.

We’re testing the ‘top-spec’ 2026 MG4 EV Urban Essence 54 with big-boy 54kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack. It costs $34,990 and commands a $3000 premium over the 43kWh version. Although, it’s important to note the MG’s prices are year-round drive-away deals.

It’s also key to make the distinction between this and the car on which it shares most of its name, the MG4 (which has just received an update).

And despite the Urban’s dimensions increasing slightly, it significantly undercuts the original MG4’s pricing that ranges from $42,990 to $55,990. Therefore, the clue is in the Urban name, with a family-friendly, city-centric nature being the goal here.

Competition is building thick and fast, with various BYD products from the Atto 1, Atto 2 and Dolphin being viable alternatives. Delve deeper into the Chinese ranks and the GAC Aion UT, GWM Ora 5 and Leapmotor B05 could easily be cross-shopped with the MG.

Of course, the sales juggernaut that is the Toyota Corolla is always a valid option, bolstered by its hybrid-only range. Although, you’ll be missing out on spec with a lower model grade if you opt for the big T.

MG covers the Urban with its 10-year/250,000-kilometre warranty – the caveat being you must service with an authorised MG dealer to gain the full period. If you don’t, you aren’t left out to dry, with a seven-year/unlimited-kilometre plan still applying.

Roadside assistance is also included for up to seven years, while servicing intervals are every 12 months or 25,000km (whichever comes first). Five years of capped-price servicing is competitive at $1366.

Aesthetically, the 2026 MG4 EV Urban Essence 54 doesn’t look like a cheap car.

MG’s designers took styling inspiration from the MG Cyberster in terms of the front lower apron, 17-inch ‘Starburst’ alloy wheels and the Union Jack tail-lights that morph into the LED light bar. Overall, it’s a handsome-looking thing and one that doesn’t go out of its way to be quirky.

The Essence gains pretty generous spec, with LED headlights and tail-lights, roof rails, rear spoiler as well as keyless entry and start. Inside, the cabin gains leather-accented upholstery, while the driver’s seat is six-way power adjustable. The passenger makes do with four-way manual tweaking, but both front pews are heated.

 Considering some rivals offer front-seat ventilation, a powered tailgate and dual-zone climate control, it’s a bit of a shame the MG doesn’t – single-zone aircon is standard. The only cost option is metallic paint for $700.

The 2026 MG4 EV Urban Essence 54 is covered by a five-star ANCAP safety rating (2025). It scored solidly in all categories and comes with seven airbags and the applicable ISOFIX points and top-tether anchorages.

It also comes with MG Pilot, which is flush with active safety systems. They include Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, driver monitoring and road sign recognition.

A HD 360-degree view monitor is a great inclusion at this price point, while there are also rear parking sensors.

Thankfully, MG offers an MG Pilot Custom Function that allows you to tailor which technologies you want on or off, but you still need to select it each time a journey is started. Although, the speed warnings are enough motivation to do so. Often the wrong speed limit is detected anyway, prompting intrusive audible warnings.

The emergency lane keeping is also aggressive, while the cruise control cuts road speed significantly at even the thought of turning for a bend. Essentially, you’ll be accessing the drop-down menu to access your custom mode often.

Being on a budget doesn’t mean missing out on tech with the influx of Chinese options.

The 2026 MG4 EV Urban Essence 54 is no different and it houses a large 12.8-inch infotainment display proudly within the dash. It pairs with a 7.0-inch instrument cluster, which the brand tries to pass off as a head-up display – but it’s fooling no one.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available if you don’t want to use the native operating system that comes with inbuilt satnav. Keeping wireless devices brimming with battery life is a 15W wireless charge pad, while there are also dual USB-C ports up front.

Other features include voice control, DAB+ digital radio with AM/FM, Bluetooth, a six-speaker sound system and support for V2L. A year of complimentary connected services is included with the MG iSMART system, with it being about $50 per annum thereafter.

EVs do their best work within the confines of a city. Not only do they offer peppy, instant acceleration to duck in and out of traffic, but the silent nature is also relaxing.

The 2026 MG4 EV Urban Essence 54 is no different. It uses a front-mounted e-motor to supply the front axle with 118kW and 250Nm (8kW more than the Essence 43). That’s enough to propel the five-door hatchback from rest to 100km/h in 8.7 seconds.

In practice, that’s more than enough acceleration to meet any buyer’s needs. The Urban also isn’t out of place on the open road, with enough power to zap past and overtake on single-lane carriageways.

If you plan on driving through suburbia and beyond, erm, urban areas, then the Extended Range 2026 MG4 EV Urban is the only choice.

With the 54kWh LFP battery, it's afforded 405km of WLTP-rated range compared to just 316km of its lesser sibling. Not only that, but it also accepts 87kW DC fast charging (as opposed to 82kW) and can replenish from 10–80 per cent in about 30 minutes. Disappointingly, AC is limited to 6.6kW for both.

The Urban comes with a heat pump to aid range through the colder months, while the official energy use is rated at 16.1kWh/100km. Our numbers throughout a 265km test bested that with 15.5kWh/100km – and the route included a chunk of highway driving, which isn’t usually an EV's forte.

Four regenerative braking modes are available, and it includes one-pedal driving. The Urban also utilises a cell-to-body construction, one that sees the LFP battery’s shell form part of the body structure. This helps protect the battery, while also adding stiffness and strength to the shell. 

While the 2026 MG4 EV Urban shares a name in part with another family member, it’s a different kettle of fish.

The Urban sits on an entirely different platform (E3 Modular Scalable), with the notable difference being the switch to a front-mounted e-motor and FWD. Yet, while it doesn’t quite match the fluid rear-drive dynamics of the MG4, it’s surprisingly capable dynamically – and benefits from some Aussie tuning.

At 1520kg, the Urban is a lightweight in the EV world. The suspension and dampers are well-tuned to the weight, too, with sufficient rebound control so it doesn’t jump out of undulations. It changes direction keenly and largely resists the urge to roll through corners.

Yet, it needs to perform well on tight streets, in car parks and saunter through the ’burbs. And it does. The suspension filters out the worst lumps and bumps well and the tight 10.5-metre turning circle is appreciated. Grip levels are pretty good too, with the Maxxis tyres (205/50 R17) preventing slip at the front axle.

It’s also rather smooth to drive in terms of the controls, meaning both the accelerator and brake pedals are progressive. This ironing out of the driving process is a boon for passengers. The driving modes include Eco, Normal, Sport and Custom. The first two are the go-to selections as they keep the steering responses more natural and focus on battery efficiency.

The design is understated, but elegant. Not all materials are soft or full grain, but there’s tangible quality. And the overall dimensions might be small, but there’s loads of pragmatism.

All the above is important, but the best feature of the 2026 MG4 EV Urban Essence 54’s cabin is highlighted by the unassuming row of physical controls. They’re both pleasing to look at and highly functional, meaning you don’t have to delve into on-screen menus for simple tasks like changing the temperature, fan speed or the audio volume.

Brilliant.

The tablet-style infotainment is approachable, meaning the learning period isn’t too painful. Plus, the screen is responsive to inputs (certainly more so than other MG models) and the graphics are sleek. The mild ambient lighting adds atmosphere at night.

With the gear selector being column mounted, storage is plentiful and the floating centre console also generates a ‘handbag’ stowage area underneath. The bottle holders in the door cards are accommodating for smaller items.

It isn’t all hunky-dory, though. Yes, it is an EV hatchback run to a tight budget, but NVH levels could be improved as there is some tyre roar on coarse-chip surfaces and the air vents up front are fussy to use. The back seat also misses out on a fold-down centre arm rest, while the headrests impede vision out the back.

However, those in the rear are greeted with ample leg and headroom. It doesn’t feel like a small car back there, with the Urban utilising its EV platform well for space – including the lengthy 2750mm wheelbase. Air vents are also appreciated, as are the map pockets, USB port and bottle holders in the doors.

The back seats are 60/40-split folding items and there is a parcel shelf to hide valuable items in the boot. Cargo capacity is competitive for the class at 382 litres, which expands to 1266L with those rear pews stowed. While there’s no ‘frunk’, a secure storage area is underneath the flat boot floor (which comes at the expense of a spare tyre).

Realistically, the demand for dual-cab utes is unlikely to be outrun by hatchbacks anytime soon.

Initial sales of MG’s electrified offering are already building month-on-month. Okay, they aren’t outpacing the venerable Toyota Corolla just yet, but it’s a trend worth keeping an eye on as buyers more readily opt for BEVs.

The 2026 MG MG4 EV Urban also breaks ‘cheap-and-cheerful’ connotations. The price is very affordable and the value here is unquestionable.

Yet, the interior offers a level of quality and tech you wouldn’t expect for $35k and it retains pragmatic appeal. Safety systems aside, the fact it drives as though it costs more is impressive, and the aftersales care is extensive.

Overall, the MG4 EV Urban makes a strong case for itself. MG has created a package that will surprise punters if given the chance.
