MG Motor has shown off its updated 2022 MG5 EV wagon on the eve of its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK ahead of what could be a 2023 Australian introduction as the Chinese car-maker eyes an expansion of its local electric vehicle portfolio.
The facelifted small wagon comes with a variety of cosmetic changes including redesigned bumpers, new headlights, a fresh alloy wheel design and a revamped interior, however the party trick of the new MG5 EV is its new vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability.
As seen on the MG ZS EV, V2L allows enables household items, laptops, camping gear and the like to be charged up.
While the regular combustion-engined MG5 is locked in for an Australian launch early next year, MG Australia said the full-electric version – which would be unique in our market if the wagon body style was offered alongside the liftback sedan – was being explored.
“We are currently reviewing the MG5 for the Australian market and exploring different variants,” a spokesperson confirmed.
“At this stage, we can expect to see this model in Q1 2023.”
The MG5 EV is understood to be a prospect for launch later next year, with a similar scenario playing out for the MG Mulan (aka MG4) shown recently.
Unveiled in the UK overnight, the updated electric wagon has a variety of headline features including MG’s latest 10.25-inch infotainment system, a 578-litre boot capacity, circa-400km WLTP driving range from its 61kWh battery, iSMART connected car functionality and the MG Pilot safety suite.
Perhaps the closest rival to the MG5 EV wagon locally would be the inbound 2022 Kia Niro EV, despite its more versatile SUV body style.
The Chinese offering beats its taller Korean rival for boot space (578L vs 461L), but the Niro fights back with a superior range (402km vs 463km) and electric motor output (115kW/260Nm versus 150kW/255Nm).
MG Motor UK commercial director Guy Pigounakis said the MG5 EV had “quickly established a strong following” in the British market “as a practical, affordable and efficient estate car”.
“And we’re seeking to build upon that success by offering customers an even more attractive, compelling design as well as a generous range of technology upgrades,” he said.
“The MG ‘Get More’ philosophy is a key part of our approach – we believe our customers should get more and as standard – and we are confident that the new MG5 EV strongly reflects this.”
