Audi has announced full details of its updated A3 range, which is spearheaded by a new five-door S3 hot-hatch (more here) -- due here by the end of this year.
The big news is the availability (in 1.6, 1.4 TFSI and 1.8 TFSI models) of a new seven-speed S-tronic sequential gearbox that uses dry clutches -- as opposed to the wet-clutch set-up of the existing six-speed sequential, which will continue to be offered with the 2.0 TFSI engine.
Audi says that because the new transmission doesn't need a separate oil supply, it's lighter and more compact than the six-speeder. The seven gears are said to be closely stacked (for good response), but top gear is allegedly tall enough to make for relaxed and economical freeway cruising.
External changes that distinguish the updated A3 from its predecessor include a "more sculpted" bonnet and front guards, while the bumper and single-frame grille have also been reprofiled.
The new headlights incorporate a curved trim element, known as the 'wing', while S line models score Xenon lamps with Audi's now-trademark LED daytime running lights.
Other visual tweaks include new exterior mirrors with integral indicators, new door handles and a new alloy wheel range.
The three-door A3 is said to be more user-friendly than before, thanks to a modified tailgate with a new light edge -- the result of a 25mm stretch in overall length.
Audi hasn't neglected the interior either, as there's new trim materials and revised switchgear. The company is also trumpeting about a new instrument cluster that "boasts a new sporty feel with black dials and red needles which reinforce the impression of precision and advanced technology".
There's also a gearshift indicator that displays the recommended gear (for best economy) in any given circumstances in the driver information system.
A range of engines will be offered internationally -- a 1.6 unit with 75kW, a 1.4 TFSI with 92kW, a 1.8 TFSI with 118kW and a 2.0 TFSI with 147kW. The diesel line-up will initially comprise a 1.9 TDI with 77kW and a 2.0 TDI with 103kW. However, a more powerful 2.0 TDI with 125kW will be offered later.
Audi says both 2.0-litre diesel engines have been extensively re-engineered, and it claims a new common-rail injection system now assures "ultra-refined running, efficiency and excellent acoustics".
Local model and engine line-ups are still to be confirmed.
