Mid-life nip-tuck for Hyundai Sonata

Hyundai will use this week's Chicago motor show to unveil a mildly facelifted version of its fourth-generation Sonata mid-sizer, which debuted internationally in 2004.

Although not dramatically different to the naked eye, Hyundai is boasting of an all-new interior, enhanced suspension, revised powertrains, and a freshened-up face.

From a technical standpoint, the big news is the introduction of Hyundai's second-generation Theta four-cylinder engine (appropriately dubbed Theta II), and this unit is claimed to be more powerful as well as more frugal than its predecessor.

The new four-pot ekes out 130kW and 228Nm, which represents a handy increase on the 118kW/219Nm outputs of its predecessor.

Among the 2.4-litre unit's tech highlights are Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) on both camshafts and a Variable Induction System (VIS) for better engine breathing. Hyundai says a version of this engine also meets Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) standards.

The engine is mated to a new five-speed automatic transmission, which gains a Shiftronic manual mode.

Further upscale, the 3.3-litre V6 has also been tweaked for extra performance and efficiency. It pumps out 185kW and 310Nm -- compared with the existing unit's 173kW and 304Nm.

Hyundai says it's bolstered the V6 by introducing a variable intake system that "broadens the engine's power curve".

Meanwhile, a few tweaks to the suspension are said to have yielded more precise handling and reduced vibration levels, and the ABS braking system now incorporates Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) to optimise braking force to front and rear axles.

The Sonata's passive safety gear includes six airbags -- dual front, front seat-mounted side-impact, and front and rear side curtain airbags. It also scores active front-seat head restraints to minimise whiplash injuries.

Among the other refinements are new dual-zone climate controls for the driver and front-seat passenger and two-stage front-seat warmers. A new factory-installed touch screen navigation system will also be offered in some markets.

The visual changes aren't dramatic, but trainspotters will notice the new Hyundai corporate grille, revised headlamps and reprofiled bumper/spoiler assembly. There are also new-design wheels and mildly revised tail-lights.

The fourth-generation Sonata launched here in 2005 and it's been reasonably well received by the motoring press and buying public. That said, its sales have declined of late -- the Sonata found 2267 buyers last year, compared with 3005 in 2006.
