There is a lot riding on the new LV-series Focus unveiled this morning at the Melbourne International Motor Show. It is arguably the most important model for Ford Australia over the next two years as it leads into the local production for the car.
If the new model works it will grow sales ahead of the roll-out of the Broadmeadows-built versions but if it flops it could mean bad things -- not just for local Focus production but for Ford Australia as a whole.
It's a good thing, therefore, that Ford Australia is feeling confident and no wonder the company is selling it as hard as possible.
The new model features the same styling currently available on the XR5 Turbo model. New headlights are the most notable feature of Ford's global 'kinetic design' language. But it doesn't stop there with a new bonnet, large lower grille opening, new upper grille and bumper.
Four models will join the XR5 the CL, LX (pictured) and Zetec petrol variants and the TDCi turbodiesel, with the Ghia model dropped. The CL and LX are available in both hatch and sedan body styles.
The petrol models are powered by the same 107kW 2.0-litre Duratec four-cylinder engine paired with either five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. The TDCi is powered by a 100kW/400Nm 2.0-litre Duratorq engine and, crucially for Ford, it is mated to a new six-speed automatic gearbox.
The outgoing model was only available with a manual gearbox and was seen as a turn-off to potential buyers.
Known as PowerShift the new transmission is Ford's latest generation hardware featuring double-clutch technology for the first time. It helps bring Ford into line with several European brands that also offer the faster, more efficient technology.
Ford claims fuel economy of 5.9L/100km for the TDCi fitted with the PowerShift unit.
The new Focus also introduces a raft of new comfort and style features to the interior. There is greater use of soft-touch plastics on the dash, console and doors. The instrument console has been redesigned and now features two large dials for the tacho and speedo, as well as an LCD screen displaying other information. Soft red lighting replaces white for the dials and instruments at night.
The stereo gains full USB/MP3-player connectivity on all models and there are new controls for the windows, mirrors and air-conditioning. Ford has also increased the storage compartments.
Prices for the Focus start at $21,990 for the CL and $24,290 for the LX. The Zetec is priced from $27,290 and the TDCi from $28,290. Automatic transmissions -- both the four-speed and six-speed PowerShift -- are $2000 extra.
