MIMS: Goodies for BMW at Melbourne show - and new Z4 Roadster
Bavarian importer introduces new Z4, Performance range of accessories - and a space-saver spare - for 3 SeriesBMW didn't have an awful lot to reveal at the 2009 Melbourne International Motor Show, but at least there was a bit to say.
For instance, its new 330d turbodiesel not only has a launch date -- it also has a price.
The frugal 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel punches out more power than the 3.0-litre turbodiesel in the 530d, with 180kW and 520Nm on hand to propel it to 100 km/h in a seriously quick 6.2 seconds. In fact the 330d is the torquiest 3 Series sedan -- including the M3 V8 that produces a mere (non-turbo) 400Nm.
All that, with an average fuel consumption quoted at 6.8l/100km and a CO2 figure of 180g/km.
Sold only as a six-speed auto, the 330d is due to go on sale in June at a recommended retail price of $87,250.
The new BMW Z4 roadster due to go on sale in May also got a launch date and price: The folding hardtop will reach Australian showrooms in May in newly-named sDrive 23i form at $86,200, as an sDrive 30i at $98,100 and as an sDrive 35i at $116,900.
As well as the new folding hardtop, the Z4 gets more interior space, slightly larger doors and the option of BMW's seven-speed auto transmission.
The Melbourne show was also an opportunity to launch the company's new range of "athletic" equipment under the Performance label.
The gear embraces much of the 3 and 1 Series ranges and includes such things as an aerodynamic body kit, Performance brakes and suspension, and special Performance alloy wheels.
There's Performance gear for the interior too, including seats, trim, floor pedals and steering wheel.
Under the bonnet, there's a special feed system that improves efficiency but -- more importantly -- enhances the BMW engine note.
Further down the range, BMW revealed that the 120d turbodiesel is now available with a manual transmission enabling it to punch past 100km/h in 7.6 seconds and return an average fuel consumption figure of 4.8l/100km. CO2 emissions are 128g/km.
Oh, and all BMW 3 Series apart from the M3 now come with a space-saver spare wheel to complement the run-flat tyres already fitted as standard equipment.
The space saver wheel for 320i and 323i models uses a steel rim, while an alloy rim is available for all models.
