MINI is hatching plans to introduce an all-new pure-electric SUV to bridge the gap between its upcoming three-door MINI Hatch EV and the next-generation MINI Countryman.
Filling the gap where the current five-door MINI Hatch would sit, according to Autocar the next Countryman will grow in length by as much as 200mm.
MINI hopes the bigger Countryman will be more relevant to families.
The new smaller MINI SUV, meanwhile, is set to feature a more striking design compared to the rest of the range in an attempt to snare younger buyers to the brand who are turned off by the retro design cues.
Set to sit on a dedicated EV architecture, the unnamed all-electric MINI SUV will offer space equivalent to the class above.
Curiously, the five-door hatch is not being dropped with the introduction of the new battery-powered model.
Instead, the combustion-powered 3-Door Hatch and 5-Door Hatch and Cabrio will get another facelift and only be discontinued at the end of the decade when the MINI brand goes full-EV.
The new small SUV will be built in China as part of a joint-venture with BMW and Great Wall.
It is set for a 2022 reveal with an expected launch early next year.
