MINI Beachcomber concept

A new AWD concept previews MINI's next all-new model -- an SUV

As the first major motor show of 2010 draws near -- Detroit kicks off on January 16 -- the new models and concepts are starting to emerge. And you can now add the MINI Beachcomber Concept to the list.

Making its debut at the North American International Auto Show, the MINI Beachcomber Concept takes its inspiration from the classic Mini Moke, but ultimately it is the first stylised preview of MINI's fourth new model, a compact SUV.

"It's an exciting look at what the future could hold for MINI," intoned MINI manager, Justin Hocevar.

"If the MINI Beachcomber Concept did eventuate I think it would be very well suited to the Australian landscape and way of life, especially given our propensity for coastal living and appetite for adventure, leisure and fun."

Boasting a doorless design, the key detail of the four metre long concept is the front end design, particularly the headlights and grille, which are the clearest indication yet of how MINI will style its upcoming compact SUV model.

Flared wheel arches and offroad tyres give the vehicle a more rugged appeal than the city-savvy MINIs currently on offer, while the rear end adds a spare wheel cover.

In its media statement, MINI says the Beachcomber Concept makes use of the "drivetrain and design elements of MINI's pending compact SUV" which will make use of an AWD system.

MINI has not divulged drivetrain details but the added weight of a AWD system may necessitate a more powerful engine. However its turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines are expected to get a run.
