MINI Challenge gets CAMS go ahead

Eight rounds to tie in with V8 Supercar calendar

CAMS (Confederation of Australian Motor Sport) has given MINI Challenge the go ahead for 2008. The inaugural one-make racing series will introduce the new R56 MINI to Australian motorsport fans next year. The first local event is also expected to mark the new model's international competition debut.

According to MINI Australia the series will consist of eight rounds and feature on the 'undercard' of selected rounds of the V8 Supercar series. CAMS has given its blessing for the series but sharing the calendar with the V8s is yet to be finalised.

The MINI Challenge originated in Germany -- where it is the most popular one-make series in the country -- and has spread to Britain, Belgium, Switzerland and New Zealand. Competitions are expected to commence in 2008 in Italy with a world 'final' on the cards to boot.

The MINI Challenge R56 racecars will be prepared in Germany late this year and offered Down Under as a 'turn-key' package. Modifications from standard include a full roll cage, racing seat and FIA-approved safety equipment. Pricing for the right-hand drive cars is still to be finalised.

The R53 model will be retired from factory-supported competition both here and abroad. Locally, the Cooper S flew the flag in Australian tarmac rallies during 2006 and 2007 as well as providing cannon fodder for the Australian F1 GP celebrity challenge in 2002. Just two months ago, Paul Stokell drove his MINI Cooper S with JCW mods to ninth outright position in Targa Tasmania (more here).

Providing a low-cost entree to the higher echelons of motor sport competition, the MINI Challenge is expected to attract younger drivers from go kart and open-wheel categories. It is expected by some pundits to act as a stepping stone to the existing Porsche Cup one-make series and eventually to V8s.

"With MINI Challenge we will be bringing an affordable, competitive and very exciting series to Australia. It will be good for racers, spectators, sponsors and for motorsport in general," said Justin Hocevar, National Manager MINI.

"Our experience with Team MINI in Targa Tasmania shows us that no matter what their age, race fans love MINIs and love to see them compete,” Hocevar said.
