MINI Cooper Convertible here next year

Drop-top version of iconic small car set to hit Aussie showrooms by March 2025

The MINI Cooper Convertible will return to Aussie showrooms in the first quarter of 2025 but don’t expect the fully electric SE version offered in other markets to hit our shores anytime soon.

It’ll be petrol-power only when the drop-top Cooper goes on sale early next year and like the current Cooper hatch range, the four-seat Cooper Convertible will be offered in entry-level C, mid-spec S, and high-performance JCW trim grades.

Pricing and local specifications will be announced closer to the model’s arrival, however, MINI has revealed three powertrain options will be on offer, all of which are four-cylinder petrol engines.

That includes a 120kW/250Nm four-pot for the entry Cooper Convertible C, which is said to cover a 0-100km/h distance in 8.2 seconds, while the slightly warmer S grades will conquer the sprint in 6.9 seconds thanks to a more powerful 150kW/300Nm unit.

Meanwhile, MINI says the hot Cooper Convertible JCW “focuses on sportiness and maximum driving pleasure” but stats are yet to be revealed.

Outside, LED headlights will sit either side of a redesigned grille, while alloy wheel sizes are set to range from 16- to 18-inches and buyers will get a choice of 12 paint finishes including an exclusive Copper Grey hue.

Other standard equipment includes a 9.5-inch round central touch-screen with navigation and smartphone mirroring, a driver’s head-up display, MINI Connected services, and “Hey MINI!” intelligent voice assistant.

A full suite of safety and driver aids will also feature, including lane keep assist, park assist, and four surround view cameras.

The Cooper Convertible’s folding electric roof is said to fully open in 18 seconds (up to speeds of 30km/h) but uniquely, it can also be opened partially for a more sunroof-like feel. Meanwhile, a small 215-litre boot shrinks to 160 litres with the roof stowed.

"We are very proud to be able to offer our customers a true convertible in the current MINI family,” said Stefan Richmann, head of the MINI brand, in a statement.

“Our new MINI Cooper Convertible offers unmistakable, hallmark driving fun, coupled with boundless freedom and great emotions: Always Open. Iconic design combined with modern technology and connectivity make this vehicle an unrivalled experience for our customers."
