MINI D blog: the black hole of Caiguna

A comms black hole has kept this update short -- normal service will be resumed soon

Dateline: 13:30, May 29
Location: Caiguna Station Roadhouse, WA

We're phoning this 'flash' report into HQ because since early yesterday morning -- 10km out of Port Augusta in fact -- we've been in a communications black hole. On the sole road that connects Perth with eastern Australia, there's barely a peep of cellular coverage, unless you're a customer of Telstra NextG -- and then the areas of connectivity are about the size of an Olympic swimming pool.

The public phone box at Caiguna Station Roadhouse is swallowing coins at a rate that would make Kevin 07's treasury weenies blush. So it's going to be a quick one... We'll be back in civilization (well, Kalgoolie) tonight and normal service will be resumed.

Yesterday was the hardest day's drive I've ever had -- anybody who says crossing the Nullabor's a doddle hasn't done it. One aborted overtaking attempt for me [Jezza] and one speeding ticket for Muttley had us screaming at each other by day's end, but after a sleep (like the dead!) and feed we've patched things up.

We've got lots to say and lots of pictures... So please stay tuned.
