MINI will not display at this month's Australian International Motor Show but will target the Harbour City with an ambush worthy of the crew that carried off the Italian Job.
The BMW-owned brand has made a habit of engaging in, er... innovative, marketing moves since its relaunch in 2001/02. This time it will 'boycott' the display halls of Darling Harbour Exhibition Centre and stage its own open-air display at King Street's Wharf 8 adjacent to the Sydney tourist precinct. And it won't be static!
Dubbed the MINI Chase, the event will invite members of the public to join "highly-skilled professional drivers" to tackle a "fantasy-meets-reality street circuit" in trio of current model JCW Tuning kit-equipped Cooper Ss.
The display/thrill ride kicks off for a day on a Saturday, October 21 and will run through the following weekend -- Saturday, October 28 to Monday, October 30.
Says MINI: "MINI Chase has been designed to show off MINI’s legendary go-kart handling, explosive off-the-line acceleration and cheeky city style. The course has been designed to highlight the MINI’s leech-like grip and pin-sharp steering, in a max revs, max fun setting."
MINI Chase will be based at the popular Bungalow 8 bar and restaurant within the King Street Wharf precinct. MINI says around 250 victims, err... volunteers will be able to join in each day.
