At the time we speculated that pricing would be around $35,000 for the entry-level model, and around $44,000 for the flagship. Today the importer confirmed that the MINI Cooper Paceman – the lower of the two levels of trim – will be priced at $35,900, and the high-grade turbocharged Cooper S variant will set you back $44,100.
"Every MINI model has its own individual personality yet each is unmistakable as a member of the MINI family," said MINI Australia General Manager, Kai Bruesewitz, as quoted in a press release.
"This is true of the Paceman which combines dynamic performance and agility with a raised driving position and lounge like interior complete with individual seating for each of the 4 possible occupants, all wrapped up in Coupé body."
In local showrooms from March, the two variants will be powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine, which is naturally aspirated in the case of the Paceman Cooper, or fed by a twin-scroll turbocharger in the case of the Cooper S. Power and torque are 90kW/160Nm for the lower-grade model, or 135kW/240Nm for the Cooper S. MINI claims fuel consumption and emissions figures of 6.5L/100km and 152g/km for the Cooper, and 6.6L/100km and 154g/km for the Cooper S. In standard form the engines drive through a six-speed manual transmission, but a six-speed automatic is available as an extra-cost option.
0-100km/h acceleration times are 10.4 seconds (Cooper manual) or 11.5 seconds for the auto, and 7.5 seconds (Cooper S manual) or 7.8 seconds with auto.
MINI has specified the Australian-delivered Paceman with much the same standard equipment list as for the Countryman, with some additional kit to offset the higher purchase price. So the MINI Paceman Cooper additionally comes with Dynamic Stability Control, 16” 5-Star single spoke alloys, front and rear fog lights, automatic headlights with rain sensing wipers, interior lights package, Sports leather multi-function steering wheel, Chrome Line interior and Bluetooth mobile phone preparation with USB interface.
Beyond the Countryman Cooper S specification, the Paceman counterpart also features Dynamic Traction Control, Sport Button, 17” 5-Hole black star alloy wheels, clear indicator lenses and stainless steel trim for the pedals and footrest. Both cars come with sports seats and sports suspension.
