Minister says Malaysian motorists lack respect

Malaysian politician slams locals for not giving way to officials on the road

A Malaysian minister has said drivers in the Asian nation need to pay more respect to their officials in traffic.

Speaking at a press conference this week, the Malaysian Minister for Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism, Datuk Hasan Malek, said motorists should move off the road to give way to official motorcades escorting the country’s leaders, dignitaries and other VIPs.

“I have received complaints that when our rulers pass, road users just don't give way,” he said.

“We must put a stop to this. Showing respect to our leaders is part of our culture,” said the minister, who noted that road users only needed to give way to emergency services vehicles by law.

As Malaysian website LiveLifeDrive reports, UK Prime Minister David Cameron has cut down on the use of police escorts, saying that it is an 'ostentation' to be sped through the traffic via motorcade and that police escorts will only be used for high-security occasions such as state visits.

At other times, the British PM travels in his armoured Jaguar, but copes with traffic just like everyone else.
