Mint Holden VL Walkinshaw Group A could chalk up another million-dollar sale

Lloyds Auctions is selling two very appealing high-performance Holden Commodores built by HSV.

The two cars are both Commodore SS Group A models, although one is a VL Walkinshaw ('batmobile') built in 1987 and the other is a VN model from 1990.

Each car is anticipated to sell for a sum of money in excess of $1 million, according to the auction house.

“Who knows what these cars will sell for. They are already fetching well into six figures due to their limited build and extremely low kilometres, but we must remember the effect of the Holden closure in Australia, where we have seen a trend of records broken since they closed,” said Lee Hames, COO for Lloyds Auctions.

“When selecting cars for their potential to increase in value it is important to tick several boxes, namely: rarity, heritage, and desirability. The VN Commodore SS Group A up for auction ticks all those boxes.”

Build number 180, the VN Group A SS is one of just 302 ‘homologation specials‘ produced prior to touring cars in Australia moving from Group A regs to the V8 Supercars category.

As such, it is of historical importance as one of the last batch of race-cars-for-the-road built in this country.

The VL is one of 750 built in two production runs by HSV, contracted to Holden. Peter Brock's HDT organisation had built a Group A version of the VL Commodore for Holden, but that car lacked the fuel-injection and optimised aero package of the later model – developed by Tom Walkinshaw's HSV using a wind tunnel.

This particular vehicle has travelled 1400km, which makes it highly collectible, among the 120 cars Lloyds will auction on Saturday, April 24 from midday. Further information is available for the VN Group A SS and VL Walkinshaw SS at www.lloydsauctions.com.au.
