Mitsubishi has issued a single teaser image of its new Concept G4 in advance of its Bangkok motor show reveal in late March. The Concept G4 is widely expected to preview a new generation Mitsubishi Mirage compact sedan.
The Thai-built production version of the new G4 or 'Global four-door' compact sedan will target most major global markets and is a likely starter for Australia next year, and would bolster the company's impressive return to the light car market.
The compact four-door sedan will sit alongside Mitsubishi's recently renewed Mirage hatchback, which has rocketed up the sales charts since launching in Australia in January to become the second most popular car in its class, its 1154 sales trailing the Mazda2's 1538 units in February 2013.
Compact sedans don't traditionally sell as strongly as hatchback models - the Mazda2 and Ford Fiesta sedans have been culled from the Australian market - but Mitsubishi Australia sees merit in bringing the car to local shores.
Mitsubishi Australia's Corporate Communications Manager Caitlin Beale told motoring.com.au that "If it becomes available to us, we'll take it."
The Japan-based car-maker says the Concept G4 has excellent interior space, "among the most generous in its class" and thanks to a 1.2-litre MIVEC engine paired with an automatic CVT will also achieve class-leading fuel efficiency.
Based on Mitsubishi's RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body that is constructed from high-tensile steel, the company reckons the new model will be ultra-safe and fun to drive too, with "pleasing driving dynamics stemming from its lighter weight".
Like all self-respecting concept cars the G4 features LED driving lights and though it's unclear if these will make it to the Thai-built production model - it will be a budget car after all - Mitsubishi is priming the new sedan as a style-meister. It touts "graceful and flowing side proportions" and "very sleek aerodynamics".
Stay tuned for more details and images of the new Mitsubishi Concept G4 sedan later this month.
