Mitsubishi has revealed its all-new Eclipse Cross and it is currently undergoing Australian testing ahead of its local debut earlier than expected in December.
The news that the additional mid-size SUV, which will slot between the pint-size ASX and larger Outlander SUV priced from about $30,000, was accompanied by this image of a camouflaged example on a beach in South Australia.
Mitsubishi says the Eclipse Cross’ local validation and development program includes suspension and steering calibration, powertrain assessment and NVH control to ensure it meets the requirements of Australian customers.
“As one of the key markets for the new Eclipse Cross, Mitsubishi engineers tested here to get information on how the vehicle performs on Australia’s unique roads and tracks,” said the company.
Australian specifications are yet to be announced, but the Japanese car-maker’s new rival for the likes of Mazda’s CX-5 and the Toyota RAV4 will come with an updated 2.2-litre turbo-diesel and all-new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engines.
The petrol engine will be offered with the choice of six-speed manual and CVT transmissions, but the diesel might be restricted to an eight-speed auto. Front and all-wheel drive will be available.
As we’ve reported, the five-door/five-seat Eclipse Cross could span a family of SUVs, perhaps including a three-door coupe and a high-performance version potentially badged Ralliart.
