Mitsubishi teases e-Evolution SUV coupe

It seems ‘Evo' doesn't necessarily mean motorsport-inspired beast

Mitsubishi has released new images of the e-Evolution concept it plans to unwrap at the Tokyo motor show in a couple of weeks.

Described as a concept pointing to a new flagship for the Japanese brand, the e-Evolution looks like it could be a more affordable alternative to a BMW X6 or a Mercedes-Benz GLE.

Despite reintroducing the famous 'Evolution' tag, the concept is said to come with a new all-wheel drive pure-electric powertrain thought to draw expertise from its Renault and Nissan alliance partners.

While the all-wheel drive format provides a nod to Mitsubishi's rally heritage, and much-loved generations of Lancer Evos, the e-Evolution does so with three electric motors. One to drive the front wheels and two powering the rear axle. This set-up, claims Mitsubishi, helps replicate the old cars' active yaw control for improved handling and agility.

As well as its advance battery powered running gear, Mitsubishi also claims the e-Evolution could offer embedded artificial intelligence (AI) which improves its interaction with the driver and ultimately provide for a driverless capability.

As well as keeping the driver updated on changing road conditions, the same AI is claimed to have a coaching function using both vocal tips, and displays projected onto a large digital dashboard, to aid optimised driver performance.

As well as technology, Mitsubishi's latest e-Evolution concept provides more clues on the Japanese brand's new design language which is destined for all future vehicles.

Stay tuned, because more will be revealed in Tokyo on October 25.
