Mitsubishi Lancer Evo returns

But only in the digital world, as Mitsubishi continues to rule out resurrecting the iconic road-legal rally car

There is still no sign of a long-hoped-for return of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo as the Japanese car-maker works on next-generation electric powertrains that have been confirmed as including high-performance variants.

But at a time when the hotly-anticipated new-generation 2021 Subaru WRX is taking shape, that hasn’t stopped photoshop maestro Rain Prisk from producing these fresh renders that are as close as anyone’s going to get to a sub-$60,000 super-sedan from the triple-diamond brand.

In the short term, at least.

The Evo has been missing from showrooms worldwide since all 1000 units of the 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo Final Edition were snapped up, including 150 in Australia.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evo Final Edition review

The Evo FE was a bittersweet goodbye for the all-wheel drive 230kW/429Nm 2.0-litre turbo-petrol small sedan whose reputation as a giant-slayer was without peer.

So we continue to wait, taking in the view of what might be – but also expecting that if a new Evo does turn up, it’ll probably be an SUV.
