LA MOTOR SHOW: Mitsubishi massages Mirage and ASX

Mitsubishi facelifts its smallest car and SUV, but only one's confirmed for Oz

Mitsubishi Motors has staged the world debut of its 2017 Mirage and 2016 Outlander Sport, which is known as the ASX in Australia, at the Los Angeles motor show today.

Both models feature a host of cosmetic and equipment upgrades, but so far only the facelifted Mirage hatch is Confirmed for release in Australia, in the first half of next year.

"Mirage hatch will be updated in Australia sometime in the first half of 2016," said Mitsubishi Motors Australia corporate communications manager Shayna Welsh.

"The LA Auto Show update to ASX is still under consideration for the Australian market and we haven't made a final decision yet on whether we will adopt the styling change.

"At this stage, we're interested to see what the public reaction is to the US styling."

For 2016, North America's Outlander Sport (ASX) brings fresh front-end styling dominated by the Japanese car-maker's latest 'Dynamic Shield' grille design.

Inside, there's a new steering wheel, new 6.1-inch Display Audio, higher-quality seat fabrics, new power folding side mirrors with LED turn indicators, fresh wheel lip moldings, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, a new 18-inch alloy wheel design and three new exterior colors: Cool Silver, Diamond White Pearl and Quartz Brown.

The 2017 Mirage, meantime, brings a new bonnet, grille, front and rear bumpers, headlights, tail-lights, foglights, wheels and rear spoiler.

The pint-size Mirage is also the first US Mitsubishi to bring Android Auto and Apple CarPlay infotainment connectivity, while other interior enhancements include new seat fabrics, gauge cluster, steering wheel and an available 300-Wwatt Rockford Fosgate audio system.

Handling is also claimed to be improved via "optimised" suspension springs and dampers, while bigger front brake discs and rear brake drums with revised pad and shoe materials are also fitted.

Also appearing at this week's LA show was North America's updated 2016 Lancer first revealed in October, which previews a similar upgrade that motoring.com.au understands is imminent for our lancer.

Currently one of Australia's cheapest new cars with an $11,990 starting price, the Mirage is powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder DOHC petrol engine.
