When in doubt, black it out – could this be the new catchcry of the popular one-tonne ute?
It seems so, after Mitsubishi today became the latest manufacturer to offer a sportier version of the Triton hay-hauler, the GLS Sports Edition. Hardly surprising given our penchant for utes, and modifying them.
OK, so the new model isn’t all bling. On the same day Ford confirmed a purely cosmetically-enhanced FX4 version of the Ranger, Mitsubishi went one step further, introducing actual mechanical change.
Powered by the same 2.4-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, the new model features a rear differential lock normally limited to the Exceed flagship Triton.
Elsewhere, the blacked-out version brings added features such as a black grille, black sports bar, black 17-inch alloy wheels and a new rear step bumper all designed to give the pick-up a “commanding presence on the road”.
In addition, the Sports model is equipped with a black power-coated nudge bar, tub liner, tinted bonnet protector, soft tonneau cover, tow bar and tow ball and carpet mats.
For those looking to further accessorise their workhorse, Mitsubishi also offers a genuine snorkel, colour-coded hard lid and ‘Venom’ driving lights and harness as optional extras.
The new model carries a premium of about $4500 over the regular GLS Triton on which it is based.
As such, pricing for the 4x4 six-speed manual starts at $45,990 (plus on-road costs), while the 4x4 five-speed automatic starts at $48,490 (plus on-road costs).
The Triton introduces a new colour, Starlight, and is also offered in Titanium Grey and black. It is available to purchase now.
