Mitsubishi reveals XM concept

New concept at Indonesian motor show previews all-new compact SUV from Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi has unveiled a new concept at the Indonesian International motor show that previews an all-new model that will bring the number of vehicles in the Japanese car-maker's SUV range to five.

Called the XM, the new concept lifts its design cues from the pure-electric eX SUV that was revealed at the 2015 Tokyo motor show.

The eX previews the next ASX compact SUV from Mitsubishi, but the XM -- despite its off-road looks -- will pave the way for a mini-people-mover that will enter production and go on sale by the end of 2017.

Created to provide seating for up to seven, the new XM -- which shares its name with the large Citroen hatch of the early 1990s -- is claimed to mix the practicality of a traditional people-mover with the toughness of an SUV.

It's expected to be based on the same platform as the next-generation Outlander, which has itself been previewed by the Grand Tourer concept.

Mitsubishi hasn't yet released pics of the XM's interior, nor has it announced what will power it, but it's thought some versions could come with a revised version of the Outlander PHEV's twin-motor 4WD plug-in hybrid system and a battery that can supply houses with power when not in use.
