Mitsubishi has teased images of the new Nissan Qashqai-rivalling SUV it plans to unveil at next month's Geneva motor show.
Called the Eclipse Cross, the new name could eventually translate to the Japanese car maker's best-selling vehicle in Australia. The moniker resurrects the name Mitsubishi used for a sporty coupe and convertible that it sold up to 2012 in the US.
Mitsubishi claims its small crossover is partly inspired by the old car, sharing its coupe-like shape.
Based on the 2015 Geneva Mitsubishi XR concept that featured an advanced plug-in hybrid powertrain, the small SUV that will sit above the ASX but below the Outlander in Mitsubishi's line up will initially come with either a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol or a 2.2-litre diesel.
Most versions will come with front-wheel drive, with the option of all-wheel drive on range-topping versions.
Mitsubishi will reveal all at the Swiss show.
The Eclipse Cross will be on sale in Europe in the third quarter. It should arrive Down Under around the same time.
