530Nm of torque is enough to make a serious point, even if the point is to push a heavy SUV up to speed.
Mercedes-Benz has dumped the 5.0-litre V8 fitted to the ML 500 in exchange for the same 5.5-litre engine now fitted to the R 500 4MATIC (more here).
For that 10 per cent increase in capacity, the difference in torque equates to a 15 per cent improvement over the 5.0-litre V8 and as for the power, the 60kW increase raises the figure from 225kW to 285kW.
Top speed is 'limited' to 210km/h and acceleration to 100km/h passes in just 5.8 seconds.
As a bonus, the 5.5-litre V8 is more efficient, using less fuel than the old engine. Benz claims that the combined cycle figure has dropped from 13.4 to 12.9lt/100km.
Along with the engine upgrade, the ML 500 is now fitted with standard Airmatic suspension. This feature is a pneumatic system that controls the ride level and adaptive damping for optimum cornering.
The price remains $120,874.
