
London will soon benefit from new mobile superchargers that can be simply summoned by an app when owners can't find an unoccupied charger in the city.
According to Russian start-up, L-Charge, the roaming superchargers will begin operating in early 2022 in the British capital and claims to be capable of providing an 80 per cent top-up for most vehicles in around 5-7 minutes.
Already operating in Moscow, L-Charge says its fleet of mobile chargers are powered using either liquified natural gas or hydrogen, or a mixture of the two, so do not put extra pressure on a country's national grid.
L-Charge says it hopes, following recent investment, it will expand its production of its mobile superchargers to a fleet of 2000, although it's not confirmed what part of the world they will operate.
Each mobile charger is claimed to cost around $US200,000 ($A280k) to build and should be capable of charging up to 25 vehicles a day.
For now, L-Charge is thought will run just two of its mobile superchargers for London that will be powered by natural gas – that's claimed to emit three times less CO2 than the average diesel car when in use.
When launched next year, L-Charge says it will see electricity at the rate of 80 cents per kilowatt per hour ($A1.25 per KWh) which is currently around 1.5-2 times more than its rivals, but hopes electric car owners will appreciate its service's speed and convenience.
The UK currently is claimed to have around 705,000 plug-in vehicles, of which more than 365,000 are full pure-electric says research from ZAP-MAP app. In the UK, not including home chargers, there's are 28,000 public charges, of which over 9000 are in Greater London.
With parking at a premium in central London, some EV owners are reporting that a lack of available chargers in prime locations are due to owners using a charger even though their vehicle is almost fully charged, blocking it for others more in need.
As well as offering mobile superchargers, L-Charge has also developed its temporary stationary superchargers that take just one day to install in a car park or servo.
Running on either liquified gas or hydrogen, the pop-up superchargers are claimed to be capable of topping-up around 288 cars a day and can support the existing power grid in peak hours.
