COMING SOON: 2021 Mazda BT-50 dual-cab

Part family car, part off-roader, part commercial vehicle and full-time towing rig, the new BT-50 gets so much new stuff it’s not funny

The all-new Mazda BT-50 has finally arrived, showing off an aggressive new design that waves goodbye to its smiley-faced predecessor.

With a hint of the Mazda CX-5 SUV to the design, but much tougher thanks to the butch power bulges on the bonnet, the new dual-cab 4x4 ute is based on the equally new Isuzu D-MAX.

The 2021 Mazda BT-50 ditches the current model's Ford Ranger platform and also gets a new four-cylinder 3.0-litre turbo-diesel from Isuzu, which also supplies six-speed manual and automatic transmissions and a part-time 4x4 system that runs in rear-drive when cruising to save fuel.

Speaking of which, the new Mazda BT-50 is 20 per cent more efficient than before (about 8.0L/100km) and although it's not quite as powerful as its Ford-based predecessor, Mazda’s new ute is claimed to be faster partly because it's now lighter.

Towing capacity is still 3500kg and the tray payload is more than 1000kg.

Along with a range of new safety equipment, including automatic acceleration and braking via adaptive cruise control, along with automatic steering via lane-keep assist, top-grade Mazda BT-50 utes will also come with a luxurious cabin with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus power-adjustable and heated front seats.
