The new Porsche Cayenne is about to get a heavily updated flagship in the form of the just-revealed Turbo E-Hybrid wagon and coupe.
Priced from $288,400 plus on-road costs in wagon form and $297,200 plus ORCs for the equivalent coupe, the 2023 Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid twins are the most powerful Cayenne variants to date, with a combined 544kW/950Nm on offer from a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain lurking under their bonnets.
Those figures mark a 44kW/50Nm improvement over the pre-facelift Turbo S E-Hybrids and yield a claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time of 3.7 seconds (making them 0.1sec quicker) on the way to a top speed of 295km/h.
But they aren’t enough to overhaul the Turbo GT Coupe as the outright performance king of the Cayenne range. For reference, the lighter Cayenne Turbo GT packs outputs of 471kW/850Nm, hits 100km/h in 3.3sec and costs a cool $364,700 plus ORCs.
The Turbo S E-Hybrid’s 130kW electric motor is supported by a bigger new 25.9kWh lithium-ion battery that Porsche says offers a “considerably greater electric range” than the old model… without providing an official figure.
It’s a similar story with the new 11kW on-board charger, which is said to speed up the charging process to less than 2.5 hours “despite the increase in battery capacity”.
Being the absolute flagship of the Cayenne line-up, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to find the Turbo E-Hybrid rides on dual-chamber adaptive air suspension as standard and comes with the Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus system to ensure its cornering prowess matches its straight line performance.
A rear-axle steering system will be optionally available in Australia for those wanting even more dynamic ability for their halo SUV, which features HD Matrix LED headlights, 18-way power-adjustable sports front seats, a heated GT steering wheel and Race-Tex headliner.
Other standard equipment highlights include four-zone climate control, soft-close doors, a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, comfort access, digital radio, ventilated front seats, surround view camera and digital instrument cluster.
The Coupe version will ride on the same 22-inch alloys as the monstrous Porsche 911 Turbo S, while the wagon scores an opening panoramic glass roof.
“Porsche is introducing the most powerful model in its SUV model line – the Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid,” said Porsche Cars Australia.
“The new 544 kW range-topper is distinguished by superior driving performance paired with high efficiency and comprehensive day-to-day usability.
“The new Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid is the second of three hybrid models that Porsche will be introducing during 2023.”
What form the outstanding hybrid variant will take remains to be seen at this stage, but the price gulf between the E-Hybrid (from $155,900) and the inbound Turbo E-Hybrid suggests it’ll be some sort of mid-range offering, likely wearing the S E-Hybrid nomenclature or something similar.
