More details on 1 Series update

BMW has detailed the changes it will make to its Australia-delivery 1 Series range.

BMW's 1 Series will benefit from a facelift and upgraded engines when the mid-life facelifted version of the car arrives Down Under mid-year.

The changes were introduced as part of the introduction of the three-door hatch version of the 1 Series which debuts in Europe in the next month or so. Australia will not get the three-door (see separate story

), however, the five-door models will continue with many of the changes.

The facelift includes new clear glass headlights, a more dominant BMW kidney grille, and new bumper and (read: wider) under-bumper air intakes. There are also new fogs up front and at the rear the lighting package and bumper has also been restyled.

Under the bonnet the 120d gets a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel boasting 125kW and 340Nm -- an increase of 10kW/24Nm respectively. BMW claims it accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 7.8sec -- 0.7sec faster than the current version but that its fuel usage has been trimmed from 6.6lt/100km to 6.1 -- around 45mpg in the 'old money'.

The petrol-engine 118i and 120i models get an engine output lift of 5kw each taking then to 100 and 115kW respectively. Unlike the European models, the petrol engines do not feature BMW's new High Precision Direct Injection engines.

All auto models benefit from fuel economy improvements thanks to revised transmissions, BMW says.

Inside, the 1 Series' cabin gets a range of changes.

"The upgraded BMW 1 Series comes with refinements inside the passenger compartment including new higher-quality materials and modern colour variants together with additional storage options," says BMW.

A new USB audio interface is available as an option, there are new alloy wheels and two new exterior colours have been added -- Montego Blue and Patagonia Green.

Unique to its segment, claims BMW, 1 Series comes as an option with Adaptive Headlights. Xenons with daylight running function are also an option.

Pricing and further details will likely be announced closer to the new 1's arrival.
