More firepower for new Batmobile

Batman's Gotham cruiser goes in guns blazing, but not all fans are happy

The new Batmobile set to feature in the upcoming movie Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice has broken cover on social media after the film's director, Zack Snyder, tweeted an image of the new four-wheeled weapon.

It came with the caption "Here's a real picture of the #Batmobile" after Snyder was apparently amused to see a variety of purported Batmobile images circulating online.

Although the film won't be premiered until March 2016, the Batman V Superman flick is generating a lot of hype, as is Batman's car.

Covered with flat panels, sharp angles and vents, and bolstered with fat off-road tyres and a large rear spoiler, the new Batmobile is more mean-machine than transport contrivance.

So far, the fans' response to the new-look Batmobile has been overwhelmingly positive. The new Batmobile is quite different from the vehicles of old, looking more like a race car with military ambitions than the original Lincoln-based version of the 1960s TV series, or even the Lamborghini-like tank (dubbed the Tumbler), we saw in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy.

However the large turret gun seen on the vehicle's bonnet has raised a few eyebrows given Batman traditionally employs a 'no guns' rule, with some fans crying foul. Will it lead to a boycott of the movie?

It's not clear what engine powers this custom-made Batmobile, or what its fabricators based the car on – possibly a custom frame – but access to the operational vehicle's beetle-wing doors (roof?) should make for an eventful ejector seat function.

The new movie stars Ben Affleck and will be in cinemas from March 2016.
