More GM right-hand drive?

Reuss says corporation wants RHD in "all our cars and trucks"

New General Motors product czar Mark Reuss has revealed the corporation will try to expand the right-hand drive availability of its North American cars and trucks.

Speaking at the global reveal of the GMC Canyon (pictured) – effectively a Holden Colorado with appropriate styling changes – the newly-appointed GM global product development chief told Australian media "all of our cars and trucks going forward we are going to try and do as many in right-hand drive as possible.

"Everything from now on we are going to try and do right-hand drive capable," said Reuss.

However, he refused to get into detail about the implications of that move, such as whether the Chevrolet Camaro could come to Australia as a replacement sporting model for the Holden Commodore, which dies when manufacturing ceases in 2017.

So don’t write out that deposit for the latest Corvette Stingray or the next generation Camaro (due in 2015) just yet.

It was only 12 months ago that the prospect of right-hand drive Corvette production was mooted on the eve of the Detroit show, only to be shot down again almost immediately.

Nevertheless the Camaro does make a lot of sense as its most direct rival the Ford Mustang is set to launch in Australia in 2015, effectively taking over from the locally built Falcon – which dies no later than October 2016 - as the blue oval’s sports model.

Apart from the sports cars there are a slew of GMC and Chevrolet large trucks such as the Sierra and Silverado and SUVs like the Tahoe and Yukon that could appeal in Australia rebadged as Holdens.

Reuss, who was managing director of Holden between 2008 and 2009 and played a key role in its survival of the global financial crisis and the recent introduction of the latest VF Commodore to the USA as a Chevrolet SS, would not comment on GM’s decision to end manufacturing in Australia in 2017.
