A new player has entered the local market for converted American pick-ups, marketing the 2016 model year Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra to Aussie buyers.
Joining other established businesses like American Special Vehicles, Performax International and Harrison F-Trucks, Autogroup International is a credentialed full-volume manufacturer and will shortly offer buyers right-hand drive conversions of the GM commercials from $139,990.
According to the firm's spokesman, James Hill, Autogroup International can deliver the new Silverado and Sierra in a variety of different configurations, including crew cab, two different tray lengths (2.0 or 2.4m) or cab chassis, and varying payloads/GCM with single or dual rear-wheel options.
Essentially badge-engineered siblings, the Sierra and Silverado are powered by the same 6.6-litre turbo-diesel V8, rated at 297kW and an astonishing 1019Nm. Drive is by a six-speed Allison automatic transmission to all four wheels. Standard equipment runs to leather trim, electric seat adjustment, dual-zone climate control, reversing camera, electric brake controller and an exhaust brake.
Optional extras include heated steering wheel, electric extending tow mirrors, cooled seats, sunroof, lane departure warning and collision alert.
Riding on single rear wheels, the Silverado and Sierra will carry a payload of 1300kg, rising to 2500kg for models with dual rear wheels. For serious caravanners the vehicles can tow up to 10,800kg with a fifth-wheel set-up for DRW models. The lower tow limit is still 4500kg.
Autogroup International claims a nationwide dealer network can support the Silverado and Sierra for service and parts.
