Kia Australia has confirmed it has secured an additional 2500 examples of the Kia EV6 for local delivery over the next 12 months.
Fresh from being named our 2022 carsales Car of the Year, the ground-breaking electric SUV range will be headed by the new GT flagship from early 2023.
It comes amid rampant demand for the Kia EV6, orders for which completely outstripped supply of the 700-odd vehicles sold this year.
According to Kia Australia boss Damien Meredith, Kia would have sold five times that number if stocks were available.
“If we’d got 3000 EV6s into Australia this year, we would have sold all 3000,” Meredith said.
“In 2023, we’d like to sell about 2500 EV6s in Australia. We’re doing a decent job with it in Australia and head office is helping us with more stock.”
Meredith said the make-up and model mix of those 2500 vehicles will ultimately be decided by dealers.
“The split will be by what the dealers order and by market demand. The dealer will make that decision,” he said.
That’s ultimately good news for prospective buyers of the high-performance 430kW/740Nm electric flagship, which is built on the same production line as garden-variety EV6 models.
According to Meredith, Kia Australia dealers have been quietly taking orders for the new EV6 GT flagship ever since its global reveal.
Increased EV6 production for Australia in 2023 was made possible by pinching orders from other countries, said the local Kia chief.
“I think we’ll end up snitching a few cars from everywhere to make it happen, but mainly from North America,” Meredith said.
Kia Australia head of marketing, Dean Norbiato, believes the EV6 GT line will genuinely push the Kia brand to new territory.
“To have this car, which has 80 per cent more power than the GT-Line, it pushes us into the performance space and it will sit as our true halo model,” he said.
“The performance credentials of this outstrips Stinger. It’s our new flagship performance vehicle on top of what is a really capable, fun-to-drive car with the regular EV6.”
