In the wake of yesterday's news that organisers are considering cancelling the Tokyo Motor Show (more here) comes reports that two more international shows are in trouble.
Spanish organisers have canned this year's Barcelona Motor Show (scheduled for May) because of several manufacturer withdrawals and plummeting domestic sales figures. General Motors, Nissan, Peugeot and Citroen all pulled out of the show citing cost-cutting.
The Spanish new car industry has been hit hard by the events of the past 12 months. Sales for 2008 slumped a staggering 28 per cent and early reports indicate that sales for January may have dropped by 40 per cent.
British International Motor Show organizing body, The Society of Motor Manufacturer and Traders, is also considering delaying its 2010 show. The British show only runs every second year but with the economy showing signs of longterm trouble thoughts have turned to postponing it until 2011.
In recent years the show has been plagued by manufacturer indifference and the prospect of clashing with the 2012 Olympic Games in London has brought on the date change.
A spokesman for the show told British magazine Autocar that postponing the show would be considered unless most manufacturers committed to it.
