Korean tyre manufacturer Hankook has called for a global education campaign to promote correct tyre pressures after a US study found 55 per cent of vehicles had at least one under-inflated tyre.
Hankook's world CEO John Suh told media at a tyre conference in Ohio this week that such a campaign would have overwhelming benefits for motorists, imporving not only safety, but the enviroment as well.
"There are overwhelming benefits we all can enjoy if we simply maintain proper inflation," explained Suh. "Low air pressure degrades performance, endangers vehicle occupants and harms the environment."
Suh pointed to a survey by the Rubber Makers Association of America that revealed millions of drivers in the United States were putting themselves in danger and wasting fuel by failing to properly maintain the pressure in their tyres. Suh called for a consortium involving tyre manufacturer to develop a global education campaign.
"Tyre manufacturers have a crucial responsibility in educating consumers about proper car care and maintenance," said Suh, adding that future tyre development would provide greater focus on environmental issues.
Mr Suh said the tyre industry has a responsibility to develop new raw materials that aid sustainability and reduce energy consumption, and that more future tyres would incorporate technology such as low rolling resistance without a trade-off to performance.
"We cannot be so absorbed in pursuing sales growth that we become blind to the vulnerability of our planet," Suh concluded.
