Toyota’s new CEO Koji Sato has hinted that the Toyota Gazoo Racing performance car division will broaden its line-up thanks to his predecessor – Akio Toyoda – having more time to focus on developing GR models.
In an interview with Autocar, Sato said: “The Gazoo brand will be acknowledged for the future – and maybe we can even speed it up.
“Our Master Driver [Akio Toyoda] was also president of the company at the same time as he had a steering wheel in his hand for Gazoo. Now he is only chairman, maybe he will have a lot more time to develop cars for them?”.
No specific models were detailed on what Toyoda may be working on, but the comments will be music to the ears of performance car enthusiasts and appears to cement Gazoo Racing’s future within Toyota, especially in the light of the Japanese auto giant’s latest EV strategy.
Hotly tipped to get the GR treatment is the incoming Toyota bZ4X all-electric SUV.
Toyota also presented a GR roadster concept as part of its mid-term EV strategy in 2021, which was widely tipped as being earmarked for production.
