Morgan makes its own birthday present
Success of the AeroMax coupe spawns new Aero SuperSports, celebrating 100 years in the businessBoutique British sportscar manufacturer Morgan has announced a limited edition run of a convertible version of the AeroMax coupe. The Aero SuperSports was unveiled in Italy at the exclusive Villa d'Este concours near Lake Como.
Created to celebrate the firm's centenary, only 100 examples of the SuperSports will be built and the price tag is expected to be $370,000 when production begins next year.
"The Morgan Aero SuperSports is a luxurious flamboyant sports car which also remains true to Morgan's philosophy of lightweight minimalist simplicity," says Charles Morgan, grandson of the company founder. "It is a celebration of our love of cars and the romance of travel and is a fitting model to announce during Morgan’s Centenary year."
Although final specifications of the SuperSports haven't been confirmed, there are plenty of early details. The car is expected to tip the scales at 1180kg, thanks to its aluminium chassis and superformed aluminium outer panels.
Power will come from the same BMW 4.8-litre V8 engine used in the Aero 8 -- producing 267kW. The engine is mated to either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission and can propel the car from 0-100km/h in 4.2 seconds and to a top speed of 270km/h.
The roof consists of two removable aluminium panels that can be stored in the boot. Designer Matthew Humphries is credited with 'drawing' the car up while the Morgan Design team turned it into a production ready model.
In typical fashion, Morgan is placing a high emphasis on the level of customisation available to order. Each customer will be able to choose any automotive paint colour for their particular car, as well as the precise leather and trim detailing they require.
Morgan Cars Australia has begun taking orders for the Aero SuperSports with delivery expected sometime in 2010. Orders for the Aero 8 are also being accepted, with customers able to receive their cars by the end of 2009.
