It may look like a blast from the past, but the 2022 Morgan Super 3 is an all-new three-wheeled, two-seater trike earmarked for the Australian marketplace.
Unlike more ultra-modern trike designs, such as the Can-Am Spyder, the Morgan Super 3 has a vintage vibe and leverages the British brand’s long 113-year history of building three-wheeled vehicles.
But you’ll find modern engineering underneath its classic lines and the biggest change to the new-generation retro-styled three-wheeler is the adoption of a Ford-sourced 1.5-litre inline three-cylinder petrol engine, which replaces its predecessor’s 2.0-litre V-twin engine (60kW/140Nm).
Morgan hasn’t released power or performance details but says the new engine “significantly exceeds the power and performance figures of previous three-wheeled Morgan models”.
Expect to see it bang out around 95kW of power, and there’s also scope for the Morgan Super 3 to offer the Ford Fiesta ST’s three-cylinder turbo engine, a 147kW proposition.
Morgan is also developing a battery-electric version of its striking new three-wheeler.
As it stands, the new three-pot engine provides power for the single rear wheel via the same five-speed manual gearbox supplied by Mazda as its predecessor, the Morgan 3 Wheeler, via carbon-fibre reinforced drive belt.
Morgan, which also produces classically-styled Plus 4 and Plus 6 BMW-powered sports cars, is still to reveal local pricing and specs for the Super 3.
But given the only Morgan 3 Wheeler available for sale here at present is pegged at $115,000, the new model won’t come cheap.
Priced from £41,995 in the UK, which converts to about $A78,000, Morgan Super 3 deliveries will begin from June, and following its home-market launch it will be exported across Europe and to the US later in 2022, followed by markets such as Japan and Australia from 2023.
The retro-designed Morgan Super 3 is built on a new bonded aluminium monocoque platform which is claimed to be lighter and stiffer than before, and along with a new exterior design the cabin has been reworked as well.
Morgan says there’s more luggage and passenger space, and despite the exposed cabin which delivers a motorcycle-like experience – albeit with car-like inputs via a steering wheel, foot-operated clutch pedal, hand-operated gear lever, etc – the interior is waterproof and dustproof, including the now-digital driver display screens and USB ports.
The cabin is finished mostly with metal materials for durability, while the seats can be finished in vinyl, water-resistant leather, saddle leather with enhanced durability or a weatherproof technical fabric.
The new Morgan Super 3 is offered with a range of accessories and options, including a footwell heater for the first time, which will have strong appeal in its biggest market, the UK.
The steering wheel has tilt and reach adjustment, and there’s also a quick-release adjustable pedal box.
“The all-new Super 3 introduces new levels of engineering integrity to Morgan, a new sense of adventure to the brand and a new design language that indicates our future direction,” said Morgan Motor Company CEO, Steve Morris.
“We have developed this vehicle at a time when the industry, and the wider world, has been challenged beyond comprehension. Yet our engineering and design teams, along with our project partners, have been able to deliver a fitting new chapter to Morgan’s three-wheeled story,” he said.
