Morris centenary in Canberra

Enthusiasts flock to the nation's capital to celebrate iconic British brand
Fans of Morris cars will swing into action this week, congregating in Canberra to mark the 100th anniversary of the first Morris to roll off the production line in 1913.
It's an occasion to celebrate two centenaries, in fact, with the first Morris built just two weeks prior to the establishment of Canberra as the Australian capital. Organisers of the week-long event are anticipating 170 cars across the country will go on display, all with some link to the company's founder, William Morris – later Lord Nuffield.
Of the cars confirmed for the Morris100 Centenary Display on Saturday April 20, ages range from 1914 for a collection of the 'Bullnose' Morris, to 1979 for two MGBs. Organisers claim that the 'Bullnose' collection will be the largest ever assembled in Australia. And the honour of the MG brand will be further upheld by a 1925 model still in daily use. Festivities commence from 11am on the Saturday, at the Langton Crescent Car Park in front of the Treasury Building. Scheduled for the following day there'll be a 'centenary drive' from the War Memorial along Anzac Parade and taking in many of Canberra's better known attractions.
On Monday April 22, the tie-in with Canberra's centenary will be marked by two tours of nearby sites that were also considered for the honour of Australia's new capital, including: Yass, Binalong, Cowra, Orange, Bombala, Tumut and Dalgety.
“The centenaries of both Canberra and the production of the first Morris are landmark occasions,” said John Inshaw, Event Coordinator. “Canberra represents the coming of age from a colony to nationhood, while the Morris car brought cheap and reliable motoring to ordinary families and in doing so gave people mobility to develop and advance the nation.”
Any car with a connection to Nuffield is welcomed with open arms. That includes MG, Wolseley, Riley and BMC products – which presumably includes those of former archrival but BMC bedfellow, Austin.
