An advance wave of new Mercedes-Benz S-Class models will be previewed at Melbourne's Motorclassica this weekend.
The prestige brand's new W222 flagship is going on sale in Australia later this year in a three-model range initially, comprising the entry-level S 350 BlueTEC and two petrol V8 models – the S 500 and S 63 AMG. Other variants to follow will include the S 600 V12 and probably the twin-turbo V6 S 400 and S 300 BlueTEC Hybrid. Those are due here a matter of months after the initial launch, assuming they're confirmed for Australia. Further away in time, additional S-Class variants pegged for Australia are expected to include the S 500 Plug-in Hybrid, the S-Class coupe and 'Pullman' long-wheelbase sedan variants.
Mercedes-Benz is one of four brands that have thrown in their lot with Motorclassica, a classic car show, after the cancellation of this year's Australian International Motor Show. AIMS this year was to have been held in Melbourne. Just four months after organisers officially pulled the pin on the Melbourne AIMS for 2013, the FCAI also declared next year's AIMS in Sydney was a non-starter. The two capital city events are the latest traditional motor shows to fall victim to declining attendances since the Global Financial Crisis. But Motorclassica, now in its fourth year, is not a traditional motor show and appears to be gaining momentum.
"It is a great honour and we are delighted that Mercedes-Benz has chosen Motorclassica to unveil the all new S-Class to the Australian media, the automotive industry and the public" said Paul Mathers, RACV Motorclassica Event Director, as quoted in a press release.
"I am very confident that the unveiling of Mercedes-Benz's newest and most technically advanced model will further strengthen the public interest in Motorclassica for 2013."
To be held at Melbourne's historic Royal Exhibition Buildings, Motorclassica will run from Thursday, October 24 to Sunday, October 27.
