Motorists offered free rego for hybrids
Hybrid car owners offered free registration in the sunshine stateQueenslanders who drive environmentally friendly cars could get free registration under laws proposed by the state opposition.
Opposition environment spokeswoman Rosemary Menkens have introduced into state parliament a bill to amend the Transport Operations (Road Use Management) Act.
It seeks to increase the use of hybrid and electric cars in urban areas by offering free registration.
"Although this technology has been readily adopted by public entities such as councils and government departments, it has largely been ignored to date by the wider public," Ms Menkens told state parliament.
Ms Menkens said hybrid petrol and electric cars saved about 50 per cent in fuel consumption and cut carbon dioxide emissions.
"Providing free registration for hybrid petrol/electric cars is one way the state government can proactively encourage the use of environmentally friendly cars at a minimal cost to the state budget," she said.
The coalition proposes to phase out the concessional registration offer once 10,000 hybrid cars are registered in Queensland.
