MOTORSPORT: Aussie world's outstanding official

Adrian Stafford has done such a good job running Rally Australia he'll be acknowledged with all the four-wheeled world champions next month
An Australian has been named this year's world's most outstanding motorsport official.
Adrian Stafford is the chief sporting organiser of Rally Australia, now an annual round of the World Rally Championship again.
He will receive his award at the annual prize-giving of the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) in Doha – the capital of Qatar – on December 7, when all of motorsport's four-wheeled world champions are formally acknowledged by the sport's governing body.
The award is in recognition of his professionalism and leadership.
Stafford's official title is clerk of course at Rally Australia, these days held each September in and around Coffs Harbour on the north coast of NSW.
He has been a senior official at Rally Australia for all but two events since it became part of the WRC a quarter of a century ago.
The event was staged in and around Perth, WA, for almost two decades and, after a brief gap, was recreated in NSW, initially in the Northern Rivers area and now at Coffs Harbour.
Stafford has been involved in other events, including the now-defunct Australian Safari, as well as training and advising officials of other international rallies.
He said he took the award to be not only recognition of his contribution to the sport over four decades but endorsement of the standard of Rally Australia organisation.
"An official is always part of a team and the power is in the team and no single individual," Stafford said.
Rally Australia chairman Dean Rainsford said Stafford had been an exceptional organiser and leader of almost 1500 officials – mainly volunteers – at Rally Australia.
Stafford paid tribute to the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) for having "created an environment of care and respect for motor sport officials, together with training and development opportunities".
