MOTORSPORT: Australian Safari 2009 Prologue
Bruce Garland sets the early pace as action gets underwayAustralian Dakar hero Bruce Garland has taken first blood in this year's Australian Safari, topping the Prologue today (Saturday August 1). Driving an improved version of the Isuzu D-MAX he took 11th place. In January's Dakar Rally Garland set the quickest time in the 15km warm-up.
But the off-road veteran knows that the real test begins tomorrow when Day One of the competition commences with 100km of testing terrain across the West Australian outback.
Garland finished four seconds ahead of Kerry Turley (Nissan Patrol) and 16 seconds clear of former V8 Supercar driver Paul Weel (Holden Colorado). Defending Safari champion Steve Riley was sixth in his Mitsubishi Pajero 54 seconds adrift of Garland.
