MOTORSPORT: Chevrolet young guns dominate

Will Brown and Broc Feeney continue Camaro Supercars success at Symmons Plains

Will Brown claimed two wins with Broc Feeney the other, as Chevrolet’s dominance of the 2023 Repco Supercars Championship continued at the Ned Whiskey Tasmania SuperSprint at Symmons Plains Raceway in Tasmania.

In a continuance of a worrying trend for Ford fans, the Chevrolet Camaro has claimed 11 of the 12 race victories this season and 30 of the possible 36 podium finishes.

Currently second in the points standings behind his Erebus Motorsport teammate Brodie Kostecki, Will Brown has now finished on the podium in five straight races.

“For myself and Brodie, we couldn’t be happier, the whole team just did a fantastic job, from set-up to hitting the track in practice to all of the races,” said Brown.

“Brodie had a good idea for a change after the [earlier] race, and we did it for both cars, and it helped us where we were struggling to save the rear tyres, but it was awesome.

“To be sitting second in the championship, Brodie is first, and the team is leading the team’s championship, this many rounds in as well, obviously it’s not a fluke, and we’re stoked – we’re just having fun going racing!”

The start of the opening race had perhaps the most drama of the three heats, with James Courtney finishing the first lap in the fence, which was swiftly followed at the turn four hairpin by separate incidents involving title contenders Kostecki, Chaz Mostert and Feeney.

Out front, Brown was pushed to the victory by Andre Heimgartner, who bounced back strongly after a tough round in Perth.

Shane van Gisbergen finished third with a last-corner pass on Cameron Waters; across the entire weekend, the Giz didn’t manage to qualify better than ninth.

Underdogs rounded out the top 10 in the form of Scott Pye, Tim Slade, Jack Le Brocq, Cameron Hill, Nick Percat and Thomas Randle.

The first Sunday race started in sensational circumstances, with van Gisbergen forced into the barriers following contact with David Reynolds, with the damage necessitating major repairs prior to the finale.

Feeney, meanwhile, took full advantage of an over-cut strategy to lead home Kostecki and Brown, with the Mustangs of Waters, Will Davison and Chaz Mostert showing solid race pace to finish in positions four through six.

The third race was the most competitive from the event, with numerous battles breaking out.

Courtney was once again in the thick of the action, coming to blows at separate times with Brad Jones Racing drivers Heimgartner and Macauley Jones.

Out front, Brown romped to the victory from Feeney, with Kostecki trading places with van Gisbergen multiple times in the closing laps before eventually claiming third.

Behind SVG, Le Brocq finished the weekend strongly in fifth from the leading Mustangs of Mostert and Waters.

Next up on the Supercars schedule is the Betr Darwin Triple Crown at Hidden Valley Raceway from June 16-18.
