MOTORSPORT: Death mars Targa Tasmania

Tragedy strikes this week’s running of classic Apple Isle tarmac rally

The driver of a Mazda RX-7, Shane Navin, has died in a crash on the Mount Arrowsmith stage of 2021 Targa Tasmania today.

He is the third fatality in the history of the Tasmanian tarmac rally. Navin’s co-driver, Glenn Evans, was not injured.

The crash happened at approximately 10:00am this morning, when the pair’s 1979 RX-7 rolled 35.4km into the stage.

“Medical teams were immediately dispatched to attend the scene of the accident but were unable to revive the driver,” said a statement from Targa Tasmania organisers.

Police attended the scene and the road was closed in the aftermath of the event.

“This is a very sad time for the Targa community. Shane was a much loved and admired member of our Targa family. We send our heartfelt condolences to Shane’s family and friends on their loss,” said the CEO of Targa Australia, Mark Perry.

There will be no additional comment from Targa Tasmania, as the crash is now a matter for the coroner.
