MOTORSPORT: Ford returns to F1 with Red Bull

Ford hybrid power set for both Red Bull-backed Formula 1 teams from 2026

Ford is set to return to Formula 1 competition, with the brand striking a technical partnership with Red Bull Powertrains that will see the Blue Oval badge affixed to the power units of both the Red Bull and AlphaTauri squads from 2026 through 2030.

The announcement coincides with the next-generation hybrid engine regulations, which are slated for adoption in 2026.

With an added emphasis on electric power and sustainable fuels, Formula 1 hopes the rule changes will level the playing field for new entrants.

Globally, Ford is investing $50 billion into its EV push, while it is continuing to grow its motorsport presence, which includes World Rally Championship with the Ford Puma, off-road racing with the Ranger Raptor and Bronco, plus Supercars, NASCAR, NHRA, WEC and IMSA with Mustang.

In F1 circles, the brand is the third winningest of all time behind Ferrari and Mercedes with 176 race victories, which have resulted in 13 driver’s crowns and 10 constructor’s titles.

For Red Bull, input from Ford will be important in innovating for the new ruleset, which includes a 350kW electric motor.

“It’s fantastic to be welcoming Ford back into Formula 1 through this partnership,” said Christian Horner, Red Bull Racing Team Principal and CEO.

“As an independent engine manufacturer to have the ability to benefit from an OEM’s experience like Ford puts us in good stead against the competition.

“They are a manufacturer rich in motoring history that spans generations.

“From Jim Clark to Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher, the lineage speaks for itself.

“For us as Red Bull Powertrains to open the next chapter of that dynasty, as Red Bull Ford, is tremendously exciting.”

The announcement from Ford follows in the footsteps of other recent moves from the automotive industry, including the news that Andretti Global hopes to enter F1 with backing from General Motors and its Cadillac brand.

Elsewhere, Audi has recently acquired a minority stake in the Sauber team, with the German marque set to take over power unit supply for the outfit in 2026.

Sister Volkswagen Group manufacturer Porsche meanwhile is said to remain interested in the sport, after its earlier partnership with Red Bull fell through.

The opening round of the 2023 Formula 1 season is slated for Bahrain over March 3-5.
