The ear-shredding scream of 'real' F1 cars might be missing, but the zero-emissions racing category labelled Formula E is gaining support around the world – from host cities at least.
We first covered the innovative – and eco-friendly – racing category back in August of last year, but Garry Connelly, Deputy President of the FIA Institute of Safety and Sustainability, provided an update for the guests attending the Cars of Tomorrow conference yesterday. And so far, there seems to be sufficient interest from host cities getting in on the ground floor to make the category viable. "We're going to have, in 2014, in 12 cities around the world – and I was really hoping one of the cities in Australia would put their hand up, but they haven't – a championship run through the streets of the city, on electric cars," Connelly told guests attending the conference.
"Each driver will have two cars, so they'll change cars. Instead of having pit stops to change tyres, they'll actually change cars. While the other one's charging they'll be racing the second car in the team."
"That's going to happen as a demonstration series in 2014, and a full world championship in 2015 – very exciting stuff."
