MOTORSPORT: Holden on fire as Commodore breaks Ford Mustang win streak

Van Gisbergen wins Townsville after crazy Sunday weather leads to a dramatic race

A processional, predictable Supercars season has been punctuated by an outrageous Sunday race at the Townsville 400.

The Red Bull Holden Racing Team’s Shane van Gisbergen took the win in his Commodore ZB ahead of the Shell V-Power’s Fabian Coulthard and Monster Energy Racing’s Cameron Waters.

But heavy rain through much of the race turned the race results into a lottery.

And the chances of a dramatic race to the chequered flag were foiled when Garry Jacobson’s Nissan Altima caught fire and rolled to halt on the track, triggering a safety car that stayed in place until the end.

Meanwhile, chaos broke out in pitlane when Nick Percat’s Commodore triggered a fire. Incredibly, the Brad Jones Racing driver was able to rejoin the race minutes later.

Sunday’s dramas overshadowed an entertaining race on Saturday won by runaway championship leader Scott McLaughlin. But he could only finish 12th on Sunday after Penrite Holden driver clobbered him on the first lap of Sunday’s race.

Mclaughlin, whose win streak was stopped at seven, leads the championship by 292 points from teammate Coulthard, with van Gisbergen third a massive 499 points off the pace.
